Extraction of gravel from Bestwall Quarry. A site of special archaeological interest - meant working alongside archaeologists in the delicate process of stripping soil to find items of interest. Items found to date include pots, coins, jewellery and implements from the saxon era. The work consisted of forming a haul road across water meadows by layering girogrid and gravel, building a baley bridge across the River Frome and stripping topsoil and overburden to access the 2.5 million tons of gravel beneath. This was then hauled 4 miles for processing. Restoration consisted of land for agricultural use and leisure lakes as requested by the Westland Wildlife Trust. Click on the images below to enlarge.
